PEI Friendly Visitor Program

PEI Friendly Visitor Program

The Mission of the PEI Friendly Visitor Program is to provide friendship and companionship to Island seniors who may be at risk of becoming socially isolated.

Our Goals:

  • To provide seniors at risk of becoming socially isolated with meaningful one-to-one relationships with senior volunteers.

  • To provide seniors with moments of happiness in the present, and something to look forward to in the immediate future.

  • To decrease seniors' social isolation thereby increasing their quality of life.

  • To provide an enriching experience for Friendly Visitor volunteers, as well as the seniors they visit.

Who may become a Friendly Visitor?
Friendly Visitor volunteers are kind, caring individuals who spend about an hour a week with a senior friend who is at risk of becoming socially isolated. Adults 50 years of age or older may become Friendly Visitor volunteers, once the screening process is successfully completed.

The screening process to become a Friendly Visitor volunteer includes: application, interview, criminal record check and orientation. Once the screening process is completed, volunteers become part of a local Friendly Visitor group and are matched with a senior friend for weekly social visits.

Friendly Visitor volunteers attend bi-monthly meetings with their home group to discuss general issues, socialize, or listen to guest speakers.

What does a Friendly Visitor do?
Friendly Visitor volunteers build relationships with senior friends and provide companionship through regular one hour weekly visits. Visits may include playing board games or cards, reading a newspaper or magazine aloud, or simply chatting over tea.

How are Friendly Visitor volunteers matched with the seniors they visit?
Volunteers are matched with seniors who are the same gender, live nearby and have shared interests. An interests survey is completed by both volunteers and participating seniors. The survey results are used to match seniors who have common interests. Having common hobbies, likes or interests makes it easier to create a strong friendship.
