2011/2012 LEAP APPLICATION AVAILABLE FOR SENIORS' ORGANIZATIONS
|
LEAPing Again
The first year the Mayflower Club of Stratford hosted the Seniors’
English Tea, they rented costumes for the occasion.
“When the LEAP program became available, we thought it would be a
great opportunity for seniors in our club to learn how to make our own
costumes,” said Mary Kenny of the Mayflower Club. The club received a
LEAP grant in 2008 to hire costume designer Karen MacPhee. Over a
ten week period, the group learned to design and create costumes from
the period of 1864 to 1900.
“At our second English Tea, we wore costumes we created and designed
ourselves,” explained Kenny. “We learned enough from Karen so that
this year we made the town crier outfit on our own. Our club is still
reaping the benefits from our LEAP program.”
A project based grant program designed to provide Island seniors with the
opportunity to learn various artistic disciplines from local artists, the
Learning Elders Arts Program (LEAP) is funded by the PEI Department
of Tourism and Culture.
The PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation has again been chosen to administer
the 2011/2012 LEAP program. Program funding enables local seniors’
groups to hire professional or semi-professional artists to teach various
artistic disciplines such as visual and media arts, dance, music, theatre,
literary arts, and folk arts and crafts.
Groups applying for the grant must be established seniors’ groups based
on Prince Edward Island that have been actively operating for a minimum
of 12 months prior to making application to the program. The maximum
LEAP grant is $3,500 per project.
