The PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation is pleased to announce the addition of two
new 55 Alive/Mature Driver course instructors to its 55 Alive Team.  Sister
Norma Gallant of Wellington and Michel Lemieux of Murray Harbour will be
certified by the Canada Safety Council next month.

“We are pleased to have two well-qualified new instructors”, says Federation
President Eric Hammill.  “And even more pleased that both instructors are
bilingual.  We can now offer this important course to our Island seniors in
French.”

One of the primary concerns for many Island seniors is their ability to remain
independent and to retain their driving privileges.  The 55 Alive/Mature Driver
refresher course is a six-hour class given in a classroom setting that is designed
to help Islanders who are 55 years of age and over update their driving skills.
Aging brings changes in hearing, vision, flexibility and reaction time.  The 55
Alive course teaches participants to adjust their skills to compensate for those
changes.  The program is conducted using a PowerPoint presentation, student
workbooks and group discussions guided by the instructor.

“Our 55 Alive Team is led by veteran instructor Dave Currie of Cornwall”,
explains Hammill. “He has been teaching the course for many years and the
Federation is grateful for the contribution of his valuable experience to this
program.  The 55 Alive/Mature Driver Course is a popular program and we
expect it will grow over the coming years.”

The PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation Inc. administers the 55 Alive/Mature
Driver Course in partnership with the PEI Department of Transportation and
Infrastructure Renewal.   The course was designed by the Canada Safety
Council and is recommended by the Canadian Association of Retired Persons.

55 Alive/Mature Driver Courses currently scheduled include: May 6th and 7th,
PEI Senior Citizens’ Federation, Charlottetown; May 10th and 11th, Club Les
Coeurs Joyeux in Deblois (French-language); May 10th and 11th, Silver Threads

secure on the road,” said 55 Alive instructor Sister Norma Gallant, “It contains
great information.”
